Luca Zidane’s position as Algeria’s first-choice goalkeeper is under renewed scrutiny ahead of the World Cup, with Oussama Benbot expressing his willingness to return to international football.
Zidane, who held the number one role during the most recent Africa Cup of Nations, had been expected to retain his place for the upcoming global tournament.
However, with less than two months remaining before the competition begins, that status is no longer assured.
The uncertainty stems from the possible return of Benbot, who had previously stepped away from the national team.
The USM Alger goalkeeper has since reconsidered his decision, responding to public calls and growing support from fans urging him to make himself available again.
Benbot’s form at club level has further strengthened his case. He played a key role in USM Alger’s recent qualification for the Confederation Cup final, reinforcing his reputation and increasing pressure for his inclusion in the national squad.
Speaking about a potential return, Benbot made his position clear. “I will never turn my back on my country,” he said, signalling his readiness to respond if selected.
His potential comeback introduces fresh competition for Zidane, who now faces a more uncertain path to securing the starting role. While the son of former France international Zinedine Zidane has been trusted in recent tournaments, he continues to face some scepticism among supporters.
The final decision rests with Algeria head coach Vladimir Petkovic, who has so far shown limited reliance on Benbot, awarding him only two caps since taking charge.
Reports also suggest that past tensions within the squad, including a disagreement involving captain Aïssa Mandi, could influence selection choices.
With the World Cup approaching, the goalkeeping position has become one of the key areas of debate within the Algeria setup.
