Luca Zidane praised for professionalism as he strengthens Algeria role

Algeria goalkeeper Luca Zidane is earning praise from his club coach as he consolidates his position in the national team ahead of upcoming matches.

The 25-year-old, currently first-choice for coach Vladimir Petkovic, has made eight consecutive starts for Granada FC since returning from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, displaying growing confidence between the posts.

Granada coach José Rojo Martín highlighted Zidane’s dedication on the popular show El Chiringuito, stating: “He’s a professional player in every sense of the word. Even when he’s not playing, he trains very hard.” During the first half of the season, Zidane had been on the bench four times, a period that some questioned his readiness for international duty.

At the Africa Cup of Nations, Zidane featured in four of Algeria’s five matches.

While not flawless, his performances appear to have solidified his place in Petkovic’s plans.

The upcoming March training camp, which includes friendlies against Guatemala and Uruguay, represents an opportunity for Zidane to confirm his status as Algeria’s first-choice goalkeeper.

The national team is also monitoring other potential goalkeepers, including Melvin Mastil from Stade Nyonnais and Gaya Merbah of JS Kabylie, but Zidane’s consistent work at Granada positions him as the leading candidate for starting duties.

Rojo Martín’s comments underline Zidane’s professionalism and mental resilience, qualities that have helped him transition from intermittent club appearances to a prominent role with the national team.

As Algeria prepares for its upcoming international fixtures, Zidane’s focus on training, consistency, and performance will be central to maintaining his starting spot.
