Former Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren has passionately backed old teammate Mohamed Salah following criticism of the Egyptian star’s plea for Middle East peace.
Salah attracted some negative reactions after posting a picture of a Christmas tree on social media, accompanied by a message calling for harmony during ongoing Israeli-Palestinian tensions.
But Lovren rushed to Salah’s defence, lauding the forward’s consistent attempts to spread positivity irrespective of religious or political divides.
“He opens his heart and mind to each of you, my dear friends,” stated Lovren via social media. “He shows love and affection for people who have no family in times of war and hatred.”
The 34-year-old Croatian international lined up alongside Salah at Anfield between 2017-2020, enjoying immense success by winning the Champions League and Premier League.
After leaving Liverpool, Lovren believes his former strike partner’s character remains admirable through messages conveying warmth to those affected by strife.
“His love and strength will always make him special, which is why God blessed him.
He knows he’s doing the right thing. So don’t judge him. On the contrary, show him respect. God bless you Mo,” he added.
Lovren retired from international football after the 2018 World Cup where Croatia finished runners-up.
Now back in Ligue 1 with Lyon, the commanding centre-back retains fierce support for Salah.
With 16 goals this season, the Liverpool number 11 continues exhibiting world-class ability.
But Lovren feels Salah’s persistence in transmitting positivity during turbulent times is equally commendable.
By calling for togetherness amidst political friction, Salah’s unifying Christmas message highlighted his globally appealing persona – something Lovren is keen to champion.
I knew that Mo has a good heart, but putting himself with a post of a Christmas tree in his house, shows how much his heart and mind is open to every one of you dear people. He is showing love and affection for people who have no families in moments of war and hate.
