Lorient move to secure Cameroonian midfielder Arthur Avom Ebong with new contract

Lorient have entered negotiations to extend the contract of 20-year-old Cameroonian midfielder Arthur Avom Ebong, who played a pivotal role in their promotion to Ligue 1 last season.

With just 12 months remaining on his current deal, the club is keen to lock in his future through June 2028.

Avom Ebong emerged as a key figure during Lorient’s successful campaign, making 34 appearances across all competitions, contributing two goals and six assists.

His dynamic performances and tactical intelligence did not go unnoticed, attracting interest from several prominent English Premier League sides including Sunderland, Bournemouth, Liverpool, West Ham and Chelsea.

Despite this external attention, sources inside the club believe Lorient are unlikely to let the young star leave this summer.

From the club’s perspective, extending his contract serves a dual purpose: securing a crucial member of their squad and preventing other clubs from securing his signature on a free transfer next year.

In addition, the move acts as a reward for his integral role in helping the club gain promotion.

The proposed two-year extension would ensure Avom Ebong remains with Lorient through the 2027–28 season, providing stability as the club enters its maiden top-flight campaign following promotion.

Lorient’s sporting director has emphasised the importance of his presence in midfield, both for his creativity in attack and his ability to orchestrate play from deeper positions.

Avom Ebong’s breakthrough performances have come quickly. Since breaking into the first team last season, he has become a linchpin in Lorient’s tactical setup, offering composure on the ball, energy in transition and a keen eye for goal.

Fans and pundits alike have praised his maturity and technical ability, especially given his relative youth and the step up to professional football.

Internationally, Avom Ebong has yet to make a senior appearance for Cameroon, but his club form has certainly put him on the national radar.

The Cameroonian Football Federation is monitoring his progress as they prepare to integrate young talent ahead of future AFCON and World Cup qualifiers.

The Ligue 1 campaign ahead will provide Avom Ebong with an opportunity to test his abilities against a higher level of competition, and hopefully capture the attention of national team selectors.

For Lorient, ensuring he remains at the club is a statement of intent—signifying ambition and a commitment to building a competitive squad around their emerging star.

As talks continue, the football world will be watching closely. If Avom Ebong puts pen to paper, Lorient will secure one of Ligue 1’s brightest young talents.

However, with Premier League suitors still interested, the outcome remains finely poised—a strong contract offer could be the deciding factor in keeping him in Brittany.

In securing his future, Lorient are not only safeguarding their midfield but also sending a clear message: the club will back their young stars and fight to retain the talent that got them to the top flight.
