Liverpool’s attacking struggles deepen as Arsenal end long Anfield wait

Liverpool were unable to turn their possession into meaningful attacking chances as Arsenal secured a 1-0 victory at Anfield on Sunday in the ninth round of the Premier League.

The defeat extended an unwanted sequence for Liverpool, who failed to register a single shot on target against Arsenal for the second successive match. According to Squawka, the Reds have not managed a shot on target in either of their last two meetings with the Gunners.

Liverpool’s most recent effort on target against Arsenal remains Dominik Szoboszlai’s free-kick goal in August 2025.

Arsenal also ended a long wait for victory at Anfield. Their previous win at Liverpool’s home ground had come in 2012, making Sunday’s result the Gunners’ first success there since then.

Despite Liverpool’s lack of attempts on target, their players recorded 28 touches inside Arsenal’s penalty area during the first half. Opta said that was the highest total by any team in the opening 45 minutes of a Premier League match against Arsenal since records began in the 2008-09 season.

The figures underlined the contrast between Liverpool’s presence in dangerous areas and their failure to produce a shot that tested the Arsenal goalkeeper.

Liverpool’s home scoring record has also fallen to a historic low. Opta reported that they have scored only four goals at Anfield in the Premier League this season. That is the joint-lowest number they have scored at home after five league matches in a single season, matching totals from 1913-14 and 2012-13.

Arsenal’s victory strengthened their position at the top end of the table. Their 24 points after nine Premier League matches are the highest total recorded by any team at this stage since Arsenal themselves reached the same figure in 2022-23.

The Gunners have only collected more points after nine games in two seasons: 25 in both 2004-05 and 2007-08.

Champions League fixtures

Fenerbahce are scheduled to play in the Champions League on 04 November 2026, while Liverpool are listed to face Slavia Prague in the competition on the same date.

Arsenal also have a Champions League fixture listed for 04 November 2026.
