Speculation surrounding Jules Koundé’s future has resurfaced, with fresh reports suggesting Liverpool are weighing up a big-money move for the Barcelona defender.
According to Mundo Deportivo, the Premier League club could be ready to table an offer in the region of €80 million to secure the services of the Frenchman who has roots in Benin.
Koundé, now 27, has been a familiar name in English transfer discussions ever since his switch from Sevilla to Barcelona in 2022. While Liverpool have been linked with the French international in previous transfer windows, this is the first time such a significant figure has been attached to a potential deal.
The Merseyside club are reportedly exploring defensive reinforcements as they plan for the future, with uncertainty surrounding the long-term status of Ibrahima Konaté and Virgil van Dijk. In that context, Koundé is viewed as an ideal candidate due to his versatility and experience at the highest level. Although he is naturally a central defender, he has successfully adapted to a right-back role in recent seasons.
At Barcelona, Koundé remains an important figure under head coach Hansi Flick. The Catalan club initially secured his services for €50 million, with an additional €10 million included in performance-related bonuses. His current contract runs until 2030, underlining Barça’s desire to keep him at the heart of their defensive setup.
Despite Transfermarkt valuing the defender at approximately €65 million, Barcelona are believed to be holding firm on a price closer to €80 million before considering any sale.
Koundé’s release clause, previously set at an eye-watering €1 billion, further reflects how highly the club rate him.
