Liverpool used their official website to acknowledge Egypt’s defeat to Senegal and Mohamed Salah’s exit from AFCON 2025, noting that their captain’s continental campaign ended at the semi-final stage in Tangier.
Egypt lost 1–0 at the Grand Stade Ibn Battuta after a late strike from former Reds star Sadio Mané beat goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy.
In its statement, Liverpool wrote that “Mohamed Salah and Egypt lost to Senegal in the Africa Cup of Nations semi-final,” confirming that the Pharaohs bowed out after a narrow scoreline. The club added that Egypt, led by Salah, “said goodbye to the tournament” following the 1–0 defeat on Wednesday’s last-four clash.
The statement recalled that Salah wore the armband and tried to inspire his country, but Senegal dominated large parts of the game and limited Egypt mostly to sporadic counter-attacks.
Mane’s 78th‑minute low drive from around 20 yards ultimately proved decisive, leaving Egypt to contest the third-place playoff on Saturday against either Morocco or Nigeria, while Senegal move on to Sunday’s final.
