Liverpool are weighing up a potential move for Nigerian international Ola Aina as uncertainty grows around the future of vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold, according to reports.

The 28-year-old full-back is nearing the end of his contract with Nottingham Forest and could be available on a free transfer this summer.

Aina, who has enjoyed a consistent season at the City Ground, is being closely monitored by Liverpool as they consider defensive reinforcements ahead of the upcoming transfer window.

With Alexander-Arnold yet to agree to a contract extension at Anfield, Liverpool’s hierarchy are said to be exploring alternatives to safeguard the right side of their defence.

According to Caught Offside, the Reds view Aina as a strong candidate to fill the role should Alexander-Arnold decide to part ways with the club.

Aina’s situation is attracting widespread interest across the Premier League. Alongside Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea and Newcastle United have all been linked with the versatile defender in recent months.

His impending free-agent status makes him an appealing option for top-flight sides seeking experienced, cost-effective additions.

The former Chelsea academy graduate has spent the bulk of his professional career in England and Italy, featuring for Hull City, Torino, and Fulham before signing with Nottingham Forest.

His performances in the Premier League this season have highlighted his tactical discipline, adaptability and work rate—qualities that align with Liverpool’s high-tempo style under manager Jürgen Klopp.

Aina also brings valuable international experience to the table, having represented Nigeria at multiple Africa Cup of Nations tournaments.

With over 30 caps for the Super Eagles, he has become a dependable figure in the national team setup, capable of operating on either flank or as part of a back three.

Liverpool’s interest in Aina is reportedly linked to the growing belief that Alexander-Arnold could exit the club this summer.

The England international, who has developed into one of the most creative defenders in world football, is thought to be considering a fresh challenge after rejecting new contract offers from the Merseyside club.

Sources suggest that he is being targeted by the reigning European champions, raising the prospect of a high-profile move abroad.

Should Alexander-Arnold leave, the departure would mark the end of a remarkable chapter in Liverpool’s modern history.

A product of the club’s academy, he has been central to their recent success under Klopp, contributing significantly to Premier League and Champions League triumphs. His technical ability and passing range have redefined the role of the modern full-back.

For Liverpool, securing a ready-made replacement with Premier League pedigree will be crucial.

Aina fits that profile, combining athleticism and defensive acumen with the versatility required to slot into various tactical setups.

While no formal offer has yet been made, discussions behind the scenes are believed to be ongoing as the Reds prepare for what could be a summer of significant squad changes.

As the season draws to a close, all eyes will be on both Anfield and the City Ground. Aina’s next move could play a key role in shaping Liverpool’s backline for the future, while Alexander-Arnold’s decision will undoubtedly influence the direction of the club’s transfer strategy.
