Liverpool have reportedly pulled out of the race to sign Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak, shifting their focus to Eintracht Frankfurt forward Hugo Ekitike as a more affordable option ahead of the summer transfer window.
Isak, who represents Sweden internationally and is of Eritrean heritage, had emerged as a top target for the Reds following a prolific season with Newcastle.
However, the Magpies are believed to be demanding in excess of £100 million for the 25-year-old, a figure Liverpool’s ownership group, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), considers excessive.
Despite Isak’s consistent goal-scoring record and Premier League experience, Liverpool have opted not to pursue the deal at that valuation.
Instead, the club is now expected to prioritise the signing of France U21 striker Hugo Ekitike.
The 22-year-old has enjoyed an impressive campaign with Eintracht Frankfurt, recording 22 goals and 10 assists in 45 appearances across all competitions.
Ekitike is seen within the Liverpool hierarchy as a long-term replacement for Darwin Núñez, who could be on his way out of Anfield after an underwhelming spell.
Ekitike is currently contracted to Frankfurt until 2029, but the Bundesliga club is reportedly open to negotiations, with a price significantly lower than Newcastle’s asking fee for Isak.
His age, versatility, and technical ability make him an attractive prospect for Liverpool’s rebuilding efforts under new head coach Arne Slot.
The decision to move away from Isak signals a more financially cautious approach by Liverpool in the transfer market, even after a season that saw them win the Premier League title.
The club remains focused on strengthening the squad while maintaining long-term sustainability.
