Liverpool agree long-term deal for Genk goalkeeper Luca Brugmans

Liverpool have announced the signing of 18-year-old Genk goalkeeper Luca Brugmans on a long-term contract, with the Belgium youth international set to remain at the Belgian club until the end of the current season.

Brugmans will move to Liverpool in the summer of 2027, once his campaign with Genk has concluded. The Reds confirmed the agreement on their official website but did not disclose the financial details of the transfer.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano reported that the deal is expected to cost Liverpool about €35m.

The agreement represents a significant investment in one of Belgian football’s young goalkeeping prospects. Brugmans has been with Genk since 2024 and has already made 15 appearances for the club’s first team. He has kept six clean sheets in those matches.

Before joining Genk, Brugmans developed through the academies of Royal Antwerp and PSV Eindhoven. His progression through those youth systems preceded his move to Genk, where he has continued to establish himself at senior level despite his age.

Liverpool’s decision to secure Brugmans underlines their long-term planning in the goalkeeping position. The club currently have Alisson Becker and Giorgi Mamardashvili among their senior goalkeeping options, but Brugmans will now become part of their future plans after completing his time in Belgium.

The goalkeeper’s immediate future remains with Genk, meaning he will not join Liverpool’s squad straight away. Instead, the arrangement allows him to continue his development with the club where he has played since 2024 before making the move to England in 2027.

Liverpool’s official announcement described the contract as a long-term agreement. The reported €35m fee, if completed at that level, would make the deal a substantial commitment to a player who has made only 15 senior appearances for Genk.

Brugmans has already recorded six clean sheets from those outings, a statistic that has helped draw attention to his early progress. His previous experience with Royal Antwerp and PSV Eindhoven also means he has spent time in two established academy systems before taking his place in Genk’s first-team setup.

The transfer will therefore be completed in stages: Liverpool have secured the player’s services, while Brugmans will remain with Genk for the rest of the current season and join the Reds after the campaign ends in summer 2027.
