Lionel Messi breaks Leagues Cup scoring record with double in Inter Miami win
Lionel Messi scored twice as Inter Miami beat Atletico de San Luis 4-2 in the 2026 Leagues Cup, becoming the competition’s all-time leading scorer in the process.
The Argentina international took his Leagues Cup tally to 14 goals, moving clear of Los Angeles forward Denis Bouanga at the top of the tournament’s scoring charts.
Atletico de San Luis made the stronger start at the beginning of an entertaining match and went ahead after only four minutes. David Rodriguez found the net with a header to give the Mexican side an early advantage.
Inter Miami responded quickly, with Messi bringing them level in the 11th minute. Noah Allen delivered the cross and Messi met it first time, directing his finish into the net.
The United States side then took control of the match. Another contribution from Allen created the opportunity for Telasco Segovia, who scored Inter Miami’s second goal to complete the turnaround.
Messi added his second of the evening shortly before half-time. After weaving his way through the Atletico de San Luis penalty area, he produced a composed finish in the 44th minute to put his side 3-1 ahead.
Inter Miami extended their advantage in first-half injury time when Micael headed home. The goal gave the hosts a commanding 4-1 lead at the interval and left Atletico de San Luis facing a difficult task after conceding four times before the break.
The Mexican club did improve after half-time and reduced the deficit through Rafa Llorente. Their efforts to mount a further comeback were then interrupted when the match was temporarily suspended because of poor weather conditions.
Despite Atletico de San Luis continuing to look for a way back into the game, Inter Miami protected their advantage until the final whistle and secured the victory.
The result means Inter Miami have now gone eight consecutive matches without defeat. Messi’s two goals also gave the club a significant boost in the 2026 Leagues Cup, while adding another milestone to the forward’s record in the competition.
Inter Miami were without Luis Suarez, who missed the match through suspension. Suarez is serving a six-match ban.
Inter Miami’s next fixture will be against Monterrey. Atletico de San Luis will face Nashville in their next match.
