In Lille, tensions are running high despite the team’s victory against Guingamp (1-0), which helped consolidate their third position in the league standings.
However, the atmosphere in the stadium soured as the audience expressed their dissatisfaction with the performance, notably by whistling. Coach René Girard didn’t hold back his feelings about the supporters’ reaction, expressing his disappointment: “Yes, we are in trouble right now. What we have not done is not enough. Football is something simple and when you can’t reproduce it it’s complicated. But I don’t give a damn about the game when I see what happened tonight.”
Girard emphasized that he was saddened to witness such a reaction from the fans, whom he referred to as “the public” rather than supporters. His sentiments were echoed by Frédéric Paquet, the deputy general manager of the Lille club, who labeled the dissenting fans as “oddballs” and emphasized the exceptional achievement of being third in the league.
The comments from both Girard and Paquet suggest that the coming days in Lille will be tumultuous as the club navigates through the tension between the team and some sections of its fanbase.
