Paris Saint-Germain Crowned Ligue 1 Champions After Monaco Slip
Paris Saint-Germain have officially clinched the Ligue 1 title for the second consecutive season after Monaco were held to a 1-1 draw by Guingamp on Wednesday night.
The draw at the Stade Louis II confirmed PSG as champions with two matches to spare. Monaco’s hopes of pushing the title race further were dashed when Fatih Atik equalised in the 85th minute, cancelling out Dimitar Berbatov’s opener for the home side. The result leaves PSG with an unassailable seven-point lead at the top of the table.
It is the fourth league title in PSG’s history and the second under head coach Laurent Blanc, who previously led Bordeaux to the championship in 2009. The success underlines the club’s continued dominance in French football since the arrival of Qatari ownership and significant investment.
Although PSG were yet to play their scheduled match against Rennes at the Parc des Princes, celebrations among fans had already begun as the final whistle blew in Monaco. The fixture now offers an opportunity for the Parisians to celebrate their title win on the pitch in front of their home supporters.
Adding to the good news for PSG fans is the return of talisman Zlatan Ibrahimović. The Swedish striker has been sidelined for six weeks due to injury but is expected to feature against Rennes, giving the capital club a significant boost. His presence will be key as the team looks to finish the season on a high and begin preparations for next year’s campaign.
Rennes, meanwhile, are battling to stay clear of relegation and will face a tough challenge against a rejuvenated PSG side. Laurent Blanc’s men, free of pressure, are now focused on ending the season in style, with their sights also set on potential domestic silverware beyond the league.
