The English Football Association (FA) is planning a series of measures to improve the level of the England national football team. According to L’Equipe, the FA intends to revise the policy on work visas for non-EU players. The goal is to limit each Premier League club to a maximum of two non-European players. Additionally, in the lower divisions, the FA wants to prevent clubs from fielding non-European players altogether.
Another key proposal is the introduction of reserve teams from major Premier League clubs into a fifth-tier league starting in 2016. These teams would play alongside ten other Conference National clubs. The idea behind this is to provide young English players with more opportunities to develop and play regularly.
A committee, which includes Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand, has been working on these proposals. Their main aim is to increase the number of selectable English players in the Premier League. Currently, there are 66 English players regularly playing in the Premier League, and the FA hopes to increase this number to 90 by 2022.
