Marseille is gearing up to host Bastia at the Vélodrome stadium this Saturday for the 24th day of Ligue 1. With José Anigo’s side currently sitting in 5th place in the standings, a victory is imperative to maintain their position in contention for European qualification.
Rod Fanni, the Benin international defender, addressed the media two days before Bastia’s visit. Reflecting on the current situation and his future at Marseille, Fanni expressed his frustrations with recent rumors and speculation.
“I’ve read a lot of nonsense. When everything is going well, we can celebrate in town without any issue. But as soon as results dip, everything changes,” lamented the OM defender. “However, my concerns had nothing to do with contract extensions. It wasn’t about money. I was dealing with personal issues, both mentally and physically. I wasn’t at my best, but I’ve managed to bounce back. It comes back quickly, and I feel the coach is satisfied.”
There has been speculation about Fanni’s potential departure during the winter transfer window, with interest mainly coming from English clubs. Fanni shed light on the events of the transfer window and reaffirmed his commitment to Marseille.
“Several clubs showed interest, but regardless of what’s said, I would have liked to extend my stay. Money wasn’t the issue,” clarified Fanni. “My personal struggles were unrelated to any contract talks. I’ve been through a lot, but I’m happy here in Marseille. Leaving for the sake of it doesn’t appeal to me. I like the project, I like the challenge. If I have to leave, I prefer to do so on good terms, like what I’ve achieved here for the past three years. Staying and finishing my career in Marseille would be fantastic for me, even though I’ve entertained the idea of playing in England. But I have no regrets about staying here. If I have to leave, I’ll leave, but for now, I’m focused on showing my best and getting things back on track with Marseille.”
