After securing a notable victory against Nice (1-2) last weekend, Lorient is determined to solidify their position in the upper half of the table. They are set to face Montpellier this Sunday for the 34th round of Ligue 1. Following a challenging period marked by several defeats, the Breton side has shown signs of resurgence, notably in front of goal. Gilles Sunu, who scored the opening goal against Nice, reflects on their recent performance.
“It’s a great feeling. I haven’t had many starting opportunities this season, so it’s satisfying to contribute,” Sunu expressed to the club’s official website. Positioned in mid-table, Christian Gourcuff’s team has virtually secured their place in the league for the next season. “We are close to reaching the 42-point mark, which ensures our safety. Our focus now is on the upcoming home game this Sunday. We need to approach it with determination and enthusiasm to deliver a strong performance in front of our fans,” added the French-Togolese striker, assessing the team’s situation.
Commenting on their opponents, Montpellier, Sunu acknowledges their improvement under Roland Courbis and with the addition of Mbaye Niang. “Montpellier had a challenging start to the season but has shown improvement lately. They have a talented squad, particularly with their younger players. It’s going to be a tough match against a technically adept team,” he remarked.
As a scorer in the previous match, Sunu hopes to replicate his performance against Montpellier. “I haven’t had many opportunities to start consecutively, so I would welcome the chance on Sunday. However, it’s ultimately the coach’s decision, and I’ll respect it,” he concluded.
