Liam Rosenior opens up on Mamadou Sarr’s Senegal future
Strasbourg coach Liam Rosenior has spoken candidly about young defender Mamadou Sarr’s international future with Senegal, making it clear that the decision lies entirely with the player.
The 20-year-old centre-back, currently on loan from Chelsea until 2033, was expected to join Pape Thiaw’s squad in October but withdrew due to injury.
His absence left many fans wondering about his commitment to the Senegal national team.
Speaking after Strasbourg’s recent match, Rosenior addressed the uncertainty surrounding Sarr’s participation in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
“How am I going to manage without him? As you saw tonight, we came without Mamadou Sarr, who for me will end up being a world-class central defender,” Rosenior said.
“It’s not about individuals, it’s about the group. It’s about the team and performance. And if Mamadou decides to go with Senegal to this incredible tournament in the winter, then we will have to do our best without him.”
Rosenior’s remarks confirm that discussions are ongoing about the player’s national team future.
While Sarr’s absence from Pape Thiaw’s latest squad list drew speculation, sources close to the player insist his decision to represent Senegal has only been delayed, not abandoned.
For now, the young defender aims to regain full fitness and continue his progress at club level.
Currently recovering from a thigh injury, Sarr has missed Strasbourg’s last two fixtures. Despite the setback, his performances earlier in the season earned widespread praise.
His name even features among the nominees for the 2025 Golden Boy award, which honours Europe’s best young footballers.
Sarr’s development has drawn admiration from Rosenior, who believes the defender has all the qualities to reach the top.
The coach’s statement also suggests that Strasbourg fully supports Sarr’s long-term ambitions, whether at club or international level.
As he works his way back to full strength, Mamadou Sarr faces an exciting yet delicate balancing act between his rise in European football and his future with Senegal. His next move, both on and off the pitch, will likely define the next stage of his promising career.
