Leeds United have initiated discussions with FC Porto over a potential move for Nigerian left-back Zaidu Sanusi ahead of the summer transfer window.
The Championship club is looking to bolster its squad, with the experienced defender emerging as a key target.
Leeds target defensive reinforcement
With promotion to the Premier League within reach, Leeds are keen to strengthen their squad in anticipation of the next campaign.
Sanusi, 27, is reportedly open to leaving Porto in search of more regular playing time, and Leeds are among the clubs expressing serious interest.
The left-back, who has two years remaining on his contract, has been a mainstay in Porto’s squad since joining in 2020 from CD Santa Clara.
However, competition for places has limited his opportunities this season, prompting speculation over his future.
Leeds preparing a formal offer
According to sources within Gestifute, the agency representing Sanusi, Leeds have already made initial contact with Porto and are preparing a €2 million bid.
“Contacts began last week, with Leeds reportedly very serious and interested in Sanusi. They are looking to offer €2 million with a four-year contract on the table. It is now up to Porto to decide whether they are willing to sell him, as the player is keen to move. Initial discussions have been positive, so a move is very likely,” the source revealed.
Sanusi has made 128 appearances for Porto in all competitions, contributing seven goals and four assists.
His time at the club has seen him win multiple domestic trophies, but with limited game time in recent months, the Nigerian international is weighing up his next step.
A key figure for Nigeria
Beyond his club career, Sanusi has been a regular for the Nigerian national team, earning 22 caps since making his debut in 2022.
He has provided three assists for the Super Eagles and remains an important figure in the squad.
Porto’s decision looms
Porto will have to decide whether to accept Leeds’ offer or hold onto the defender for the remainder of his contract.
The Portuguese giants are currently focused on their upcoming league fixture against Benfica, a crucial clash in their domestic campaign.
Leeds’ pursuit of Sanusi reflects their ambition to strengthen defensively, with the Nigerian’s experience and versatility seen as valuable assets ahead of a potential return to England’s top flight.
