Imam Ashour, the Egyptian national team midfielder and player for Al-Ahly, recently received a six-month prison sentence, a decision that caught his legal team by surprise.
Speaking on Tuesday, Ashour’s lawyer, Mohamed Othman, provided insight into the unexpected judgment, stating that the court issued the sentence in absentia, without the player’s knowledge.
“We were not informed that Imam Ashour’s trial was set to proceed,” Othman explained. “As a result, the decision was issued in absentia.”
He further elaborated that Ashour’s legal team has the right to appeal the ruling, which would automatically suspend the sentence’s enforcement while the appeal is considered.
The Sheikh Zayed Misdemeanor Appeals Court handed down the prison sentence after upholding a complaint against Ashour.
The charges stem from an incident at a popular shopping center in Sheikh Zayed, where the footballer allegedly assaulted a security guard.
Initially, the Sheikh Zayed Misdemeanor Court acquitted Ashour of the assault charge.
He was released on a bail of 5,000 Egyptian pounds, pending further investigation.
However, the prosecutor appealed the acquittal, bringing forward additional witness testimony from the security personnel involved.
According to the prosecution’s case, Ashour had reportedly entered the shopping center with 15 other individuals.
Witness statements suggested that a physical altercation occurred, leading to the security guard’s allegations against the player.
Othman remains hopeful that the sentence will be overturned upon appeal, emphasizing Ashour’s previous acquittal and the circumstances surrounding the in absentia judgment.
The situation has raised considerable public interest and sparked discussions within the football community, where fans await further developments on the case.
