Langelihle Phili sets trophy target after joining Kaizer Chiefs

Langelihle Phili says he is determined to help Kaizer Chiefs win trophies after completing his move from Stellenbosch this week.

The 21-year-old winger has joined Amakhosi in a deal that saw Ashley Du Preez and Given Msimango move to Stellenbosch. Phili has already outlined his ambition to celebrate silverware and build lasting memories with the Glamour Boys.

“Thank you for choosing me. I am finally here and would love nothing more than to win trophies and make great memories with you,” Phili told the club’s official website.

Phili arrives at Kaizer Chiefs after making 46 appearances for Stellenbosch, scoring seven goals and supplying two assists. His performances were recognised when he was named Stellies’ Player of the Season.

The move also has a strong personal significance for Phili, who grew up supporting Kaizer Chiefs. He said his connection with the club helped make the transfer an easy decision.

“I had two seasons with Stellenbosch and now I am overjoyed to be here at Chiefs,” he said.

“The first thing that came to mind was my grandma, who has sadly passed away. She supported Kaizer Chiefs and I always used to watch them with her when I was young.

“Everyone at home supports Amakhosi, so I thought it would be a good move for me to join the team I grew up supporting. Being here feels like my dream has really come true.

“I can’t wait to meet everybody and start training with the rest of the team and the coaching staff.”

Phili could make his Kaizer Chiefs debut on Sunday, when his new side host Golden Arrows in the MTN8 quarter-final at FNB Stadium. The match is scheduled to begin at 18:00.

His first appearance for the club would come after a move that combines a significant professional opportunity with a long-standing family connection. Having spent two seasons with Stellenbosch and been named the club’s best player for the season, Phili now begins the next stage of his career with the team he supported as a child.

The new signing’s immediate focus is on settling into the squad, meeting his new team-mates and working with the coaching staff. He has made clear, however, that his broader objective is to contribute to Kaizer Chiefs’ pursuit of trophies.

The transfer was completed this week, with Du Preez and Msimango heading in the opposite direction to Stellenbosch as part of the agreement.
