Jonathan Tah has confirmed he will leave Bayer Leverkusen at the end of the season, with La Liga clubs Barcelona and Real Madrid reportedly interested in signing the German international.
The 29-year-old defender, who has Ivorian heritage, announced his decision after Leverkusen’s 1-1 draw with St. Pauli, stating, “Yes, in any case,” when asked about his plans to depart.
His current contract expires in June, allowing him to negotiate with other clubs.
Tah has been linked with top European clubs, including Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Real Madrid.
Despite the interest, Tah has not yet decided on his next destination. He mentioned, “No, to be honest, I don’t have a timeframe. But the club knows that. And, as always, I’ve been very open about it.”
Barcelona has reportedly made an initial proposal to sign Tah as a free agent in June.
The club’s sporting director, Deco, and agent Pini Zahavi, who also represents Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski and coach Hansi Flick, have been involved in discussions.
Sources suggest that Tah attended a recent meeting with Barcelona representatives, and the meeting was described as positive.
Real Madrid is also interested in Tah, especially after injuries to defenders Éder Militão and David Alaba.
However, Barcelona is currently considered the frontrunner for his signature.
Tah has been a key player for Leverkusen, making 20 appearances in the Bundesliga and featuring in all eight Champions League matches this season.
His experience and leadership qualities make him an attractive prospect for top clubs seeking to strengthen their defensive options.
