Kwinika says Kaizer Chiefs’ unbeaten run shows new tactics are working

Kaizer Chiefs defender Zitha Kwinika says the club’s unbeaten start to the Betway Premiership season is evidence that its new tactical approach is taking effect and helping to create a winning environment.

The 32-year-old was speaking to Kaizer Chiefs’ media department before Wednesday’s match against Richards Bay, with Amakhosi looking to maintain the momentum generated by their positive opening to the campaign.

Kwinika said the coaching staff had given the team a clearer identity, with the players understanding the demands of the system and enjoying the way they are being asked to play.

“I think the team is also coping well with the new coaches, the new season. I think we’ve proven in the games we’ve played that we are a different team. The style of play, the structure and how we do things. So I think it’s proven that there’s improvement. There’s new tactics that are being placed and trying to get to a certain way of playing that we enjoy and we all understand and helping and getting better as a team. I would say I’m doing well,” Kwinika said.

The experienced defender also pointed to the impact of the club’s new players, saying their performances were another sign that the squad was progressing.

Langelihle Phili was highlighted after scoring a goal, while Luke Baartman has also taken advantage of opportunities to start matches. Kwinika said those contributions showed that players were beginning to understand what was expected of them.

“I’m doing well, I think, building up to the new season, getting a bit of momentum and growing into the games we’ve played so far. The new players, I think, are doing well. I chose a team like your [Langelihle] Phili came in, scored a goal. And then maybe like your [Luke] Baartman. Yes, they’ve been with the team, but now getting an opportunity to start games and all. That shows that we are in the right direction. And most of the players are understanding what’s required from them,” he added.

For Kwinika, the next step is to ensure that the team’s positive results continue. He believes victories are essential not only for maintaining momentum but also for strengthening confidence throughout the squad.

The defender said developing a habit of winning could help Kaizer Chiefs build the environment required for sustained improvement.

“I think that’s the best way to keep the momentum, getting good results, mainly winning games. That’s the only way to keep the momentum going, the environment, the confidence. So I think getting used to winning is important because it just creates an environment of winners and winners get stronger by day,” Kwinika concluded.

Kaizer Chiefs’ unbeaten run will be tested when they face Richards Bay on Wednesday, as the club continues to adapt to its new coaching methods and tactical structure at Naturena.
