Kuffour: Kompany’s rise opening doors for Essien, other black coaches
Ghana icon Samuel Osei Kuffour has pointed to Vincent Kompany’s rapid ascent at Bayern Munich as a defining moment for black coaches.
The former Ghana international said Kompany’s achievements, winning the 2025–26 Bundesliga and reaching the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League, are shifting perceptions at the highest level of European football and creating tangible opportunities for others to follow.
The Bayern Munich great highlighted the broader impact of Kompany’s success, singling out Michael Essien as part of a new generation of coaches who could benefit.
“Vincent Kompany is one of the top young coaches. He has opened so many doors, and he’s young. It’s probably an opportunity for Michael Essien, who is now into coaching, to also have a chance. The door is wide open for black coaches.”
Essien is currently an assistant coach at FC Nordsjaelland as he continues to build experience ahead of a future head coaching role.
Kuffour added, “He won the league. He went out last year in the quarter-final against Real Madrid [in the Champions League], and now he is in the semi-final. He is the first black coach to manage in Germany. We now have a black coach leading one of the top clubs in the world.”
