Kompany confident Musiala is ready to hit top gear for Bayern run-in
Bayern Munich are beginning to witness the steady resurgence of Jamal Musiala, with head coach Vincent Kompany convinced the playmaker is on the verge of returning to his most destructive form after a long injury lay-off.
The 23-year-old Germany international endured a difficult spell on the sidelines after suffering a serious leg injury at last year’s Club World Cup.
A collision with then-Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma left him with a fractured fibula, as well as a dislocated and broken ankle, a setback that halted his momentum in a pivotal phase of his development.
Since returning to action at the start of the year, Musiala has been carefully reintegrated into Bayern’s system, gradually increasing his minutes as he rebuilds rhythm and confidence.
His comeback has also coincided with a personal objective of earning a place in Germany’s squad for the upcoming World Cup in June, adding further urgency to his recovery arc.
Bayern’s midfield balance has been tested in his absence, with Serge Gnabry shouldering additional responsibility before his own spell on the sidelines due to an adductor injury. That has placed greater creative expectation on Musiala at a crucial stage of the campaign.
Speaking ahead of Bayern’s German Cup semi-final against Bayer Leverkusen, Kompany highlighted the midfielder’s physical and technical progression since his return.
“Jamal is in a good phase at the moment,” he said, praising both his conditioning and renewed intensity off the ball. The Bayern coach stressed that Musiala’s evolution is not only about flair but also about increased work rate and strength, elements that have become more visible in recent weeks.
Kompany also pointed to the midfielder’s impressive productivity despite limited minutes. In just 600 minutes of football this season, Musiala has already registered nine goal contributions across all competitions, a return that underlines his influence even when not at full rhythm.
Bayern, who recently secured the Bundesliga title with matches to spare, remain in contention for a historic treble as they prepare for a Champions League semi-final first leg against Paris Saint-Germain in France. Their German Cup ambitions also remain alive, though the club has not reached the final since 2020.
For Kompany, the next phase is about unlocking Musiala’s full creative freedom once again.
“When he has this total freedom again, and it will come back, then you will have an even more developed version of Musiala,” he said, signalling belief that Bayern’s key talent is only beginning to regain his peak level at a decisive point in the season.
