Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany has declared his side worthy semifinalists after a pulsating 4-3 victory over Real Madrid sealed a 6-4 aggregate triumph in their Champions League quarterfinal clash.

In a contest defined by momentum swings and late drama, Bayern showcased resilience and attacking efficiency to edge past the Spanish giants.

The tie reached a boiling point late on when Madrid midfielder Eduardo Camavinga was sent off in the 86th minute with the visitors leading 3-2 on the night, tilting the balance firmly in Bayern’s favour.

Arda Güler, who netted twice in an impressive individual display, was also dismissed after the final whistle following protests.

Reflecting on the performance, Kompany emphasised his team’s mental strength in overcoming adversity on one of Europe’s biggest stages.

“Today we showed a lot of character; we had a lot of faith to rise above adversity,” he said. “We can leave with our heads held high.” His remarks captured both relief and pride after navigating a fiercely contested tie against a side renowned for its pedigree in the competition.

The Belgian coach acknowledged the quality of their opponents while underlining the significance of the result.

“Real Madrid is very, very strong; they have enormous individual quality. It’s a very special night for us,” he added, highlighting the magnitude of eliminating such a formidable opponent.

Looking ahead, Bayern are set to face Paris Saint-Germain in the semifinals, though Kompany was cautious about making comparisons.

“That’s difficult to answer… they and Real Madrid are the biggest right now; it’s something you can’t really say,” he noted when asked if PSG would present a tougher challenge.

Despite the triumph, Kompany will miss the first leg after receiving a booking during the match. He expressed frustration over the decision but remained composed.

“I’m not happy with my yellow card… My yellow card was very strict. But oh well, it’s not important. I have a lot of faith in my staff, in the whole club.”
