Al Ahly manager Marcel Koller and Zamalek’s José Gomes have both been shortlisted for the highly coveted CAF Manager of the Year award, following a series of remarkable achievements in African club football over the past year.

Marcel Koller earned his nomination after steering Egyptian giants Al Ahly to yet another CAF Champions League title.

Under his guidance, Al Ahly demonstrated dominance throughout the competition, setting a new record for the longest unbeaten run in tournament history.

His side also showcased an exceptional defensive display, conceding just one goal on their path to the championship.

The Swiss tactician has been lauded for his ability to maintain Al Ahly’s winning mentality, reinforcing their status as one of Africa’s most formidable football clubs.

Meanwhile, José Gomes of Zamalek also finds himself in the spotlight for his impressive campaign with the Cairo-based side.

The Portuguese coach led Zamalek to Confederation Cup glory, further enhancing his credentials by securing the African Super Cup in a thrilling penalty shootout against none other than Al Ahly

. Gomes’ tactical prowess and ability to navigate high-pressure matches have been key to his team’s resurgence on the continental stage, making him a strong contender for the prestigious CAF accolade.

The two managers are part of a distinguished 10-man shortlist, which includes some of the most successful coaches across the continent.

Among those vying for the award are Angola’s Pedro Gonçalves, who has impressed with his leadership of Angola’s national team, DR Congo’s Sébastien Desabre, and South Africa’s Hugo Broos, who has been praised for his work with the South African national team.

Both Koller and Gomes have made significant impacts on African football, and their inclusion in the shortlist reflects the high standards they have set at their respective clubs.

The rivalry between Al Ahly and Zamalek, two of Africa’s most storied football institutions, has only added to the anticipation surrounding this year’s CAF awards, with both managers representing the pinnacle of Egyptian football on the continental stage.

The CAF Manager of the Year award is a recognition of excellence in coaching, and the competition this year is fierce, with each nominee bringing a unique set of accomplishments to the table.

Koller’s success with Al Ahly and Gomes’ triumphs with Zamalek have made the 2024 football season one to remember, particularly in Egyptian football, where the two clubs continue to battle for supremacy both domestically and internationally.

The CAF awards ceremony, where the winner will be revealed, is scheduled to take place on December 16, 2024, in Morocco.

Both Koller and Gomes will be eagerly awaiting the results as they continue to shape the future of African football with their tactical ingenuity and leadership.
