Klaus Dieters Pagels, a 63-year-old German, has been appointed as the new interim coach of Zimbabwe, according to an announcement by the Zimbabwe Football Federation (ZIFA). He takes over from Rahman Gumbo, who resigned following the national team’s failure to qualify for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (CAN).
Pagels’ contract, funded by the German government, is set to conclude after the 2014 World Cup qualifiers in September. As of now, Zimbabwe is in the third position in their group after two rounds of qualification.
Zimbabwean football has faced challenges recently, with the national team being disbanded earlier due to a match-fixing scandal.
