Security Tightened for Vita Club vs Zamalek Clash Following Deadly Stampede
In the wake of a tragic incident during a recent domestic playoff match, authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo have imposed strict crowd control measures for Vita Club’s upcoming African Champions League fixture against Egypt’s Zamalek.
The match, scheduled to take place this Sunday at the Tata Raphaël Stadium in Kinshasa, comes just days after a deadly stampede during the final playoff encounter between local rivals AS Vita Club and TP Mazembe. The chaos, which unfolded in the overcrowded stadium, claimed the lives of 15 people and left many more injured.
In response, the Congolese Ministry of the Interior and Security has dramatically reduced the number of tickets allowed for sale to just 5,000 — a fraction of the stadium’s full capacity. The move is aimed at preventing another tragedy and ensuring the safety of fans, players, and officials alike.
The decision was made following a high-level meeting involving the Congolese Football Association (FECOFA), the Ministry of the Interior, and other relevant security services. According to a statement published on the CAF (Confederation of African Football) website, “The FECOFA Executive Committee, led by President Constant Omari, visited the stadium to take additional security measures to ensure the smooth running of the V. Club–Zamalek match.”
Zamalek, citing safety concerns, had reportedly requested the match be moved to a different location. However, the request was denied, and the game will proceed as planned in Kinshasa under heightened security protocols.
This match marks the opening round of the African Champions League group stage for both clubs. Vita Club, one of DR Congo’s most storied teams, will be looking to capitalize on home advantage, albeit in a subdued atmosphere due to the limited attendance.
Authorities have promised rigorous oversight of stadium entry, enhanced emergency response preparedness, and a visible security presence throughout the venue.
