MC Alger’s struggles persisted as they were held to a goalless draw at home against a resolute ASO Chlef side on Saturday afternoon.
Despite dominating the match, the Algerian champions failed to find the breakthrough, frustrating fans and adding to the mounting pressure on new coach Khaled Benyahia.
The Tunisian coach, who recently replaced Patrice Beaumelle, was expected to inject fresh momentum into the team, but his debut match offered no immediate turnaround.
The hosts created numerous chances but were consistently denied by ASO Chlef’s well-organized defense, led by their standout goalkeeper Mohamed Medjadel.
Medjadel, a native of Mascara, delivered a stellar performance, including a crucial penalty save against Larbi Tabti in the 43rd minute.
This pivotal moment ensured ASO Chlef left the match with a valuable point, despite enduring relentless pressure from MC Alger’s attacking trio of Delort, Meziani, and Naidji.
Speaking after the match, Benyahia acknowledged the team’s lack of efficiency in front of goal but remained optimistic.
“We insisted with the players, telling them to persevere and be patient. Unfortunately, something essential was missing: efficiency in front of goal.
We had chances but couldn’t finish. We must therefore look for solutions that may involve changing one or two players. However, despite the result, I am not worried,” he said.
MC Alger’s inability to capitalize on their opportunities leaves them in a precarious position.
This result follows a defeat earlier in the week against Sudan’s Hilal, which led to Beaumelle’s departure.
Benyahia now faces the daunting task of steering the team back on course, both domestically and in African competitions.
The club’s immediate schedule is demanding, with an away match against Magra on December 26, followed by a cup tie against ES Ben Aknoun on December 30.
The pressure will only intensify as MC Alger prepares for a crucial CAF Champions League encounter against Hilal in Nouakchott.
While Benyahia remains hopeful, the challenges ahead highlight the scale of the task he faces.
The team’s inability to convert chances into goals underscores the urgency for tactical adjustments and perhaps a shift in personnel.
As the season progresses, the new coach will need more than optimism to deliver the results MC Alger’s passionate supporters expect.
