Victor Wanyama has signed with Scottish Championship side Dunfermline Athletic, marking his return to Scottish football after more than a decade.
The 33-year-old Kenyan midfielder, who previously played for Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton in the Premier League, was without a club for two months following his departure from CF Montréal.
Dunfermline confirmed his signing on Wednesday evening, with Wanyama joining the team until the end of the season.
A Return to Familiar Ground
Scottish football is not new to Wanyama, who made a name for himself at Celtic between 2011 and 2013.
His performances in Glasgow earned him a move to Southampton, where he established himself in England’s top flight before making the switch to Tottenham in 2016.
After four years at Spurs, he moved to Major League Soccer, spending five seasons with CF Montréal.
Dunfermline, currently struggling in the Scottish Championship, playfully announced Wanyama’s arrival by referencing a viral tweet he posted in 2012: “I had spaghetti tonight, it was very good, I liked it.” The humorous approach added a lighthearted touch to what is a significant signing for the club.
A Battle for Survival
Wanyama joins Dunfermline at a crucial time, with the team sitting second from bottom in the Scottish second tier and facing the risk of relegation.
His experience and leadership will be vital as the club fights to secure its place in the division.
At 33, the Kenyan international still has plenty to offer, and his return to Scotland provides him with an opportunity to make an impact once more.
With his wealth of experience in European and North American football, Dunfermline will hope Wanyama can help steer them to safety in the remaining games of the season.
