Kenyan football officials have been entrusted with crucial roles in the first leg of the 2024/25 CAF Confederation Cup’s preliminary rounds, marking a significant moment for the country’s football community. Five Kenyan referees have been appointed to oversee matches across Africa, underscoring the growing reputation of Kenya’s match officials on the continental stage.

On August 16, 2024, Francis Oliele served as the Match Commissioner for the encounter between Jamus FC of South Sudan and Stade Tunisien from Tunisia.

The match, held at the Juba Stadium in South Sudan, was a pivotal moment for both teams as they sought to advance in the early stages of the competition.

Oliele’s role as Match Commissioner was critical in ensuring that the game was conducted according to the high standards expected by CAF.

Another notable appointment saw Dickens Mimisa officiating as the Center Referee for the match between Eswatini’s Nsingizini Hotspurs FC and South Africa’s Stellenbosch FC.

This match, which took place on August 17, 2024, at the iconic Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, South Africa, was a significant test for both teams as they aimed to secure a foothold in the competition.

Mimisa’s leadership on the field was complemented by the efforts of his compatriots Samuel Kuria and Oliver Omondi, who served as the First and Second Assistant Referees, respectively.

Completing the Kenyan contingent was Kelvin Maina, who played the vital role of Fourth Official, providing support to the officiating team and ensuring that the match proceeded smoothly.

These appointments reflect not only the individual achievements of the referees involved but also the increasing recognition of Kenyan officials within African football.

The presence of Kenyan referees in such prominent matches is a source of pride for the nation’s football community.

It highlights the growing respect for Kenyan match officials and their ability to manage high-pressure situations in important continental fixtures.

This recognition is a testament to the rigorous training and professionalism that Kenyan referees bring to the sport.

Moreover, these appointments underscore the rising prominence of Kenyan football on the international stage.

As Kenyan officials continue to be selected for key roles in major tournaments, it is clear that the nation is making significant strides in developing and showcasing its footballing talent.

For the officials themselves, these assignments are a major career milestone, offering them the opportunity to gain valuable experience and demonstrate their skills at the highest level.

For Kenyan football, it is a moment to celebrate and build upon, as the country continues to establish itself as a key player in the world of African football officiating.

As the CAF Confederation Cup progresses, the contributions of these Kenyan referees will undoubtedly be watched with great interest, not just by their fellow countrymen, but by the broader footballing community across the continent.
