Nwankwo Kanu, commonly known as Kanu, who is one of the few remaining players from the Luciano D’Onofrio era at Standard de Liège in the Belgian Jupiler League, has shared his thoughts on the club’s current situation.
Kanu expressed the belief that Standard lost a significant figure in Luciano D’Onofrio, and the club currently lacks individuals who truly understand the intricacies of football. He acknowledges that it’s easier to point out one or two culprits than address the broader team dynamic. Kanu emphasizes that out of the ten transfers made, only Kawashima is a regular starter, indicating a potential problem with the integration of new players into the squad.
He points out that the team is quite young, lacking in leadership and experience, particularly in the offensive line, which consists mostly of younger players. Despite these challenges, Kanu states that he does not want to leave the club abruptly. If no suitable offer comes, he is prepared to see out the remaining two years of his contract at Standard de Liège.
Kanu also mentions feeling at home in Liège, highlighting personal factors such as a nicer apartment and his eldest daughter attending school. Despite any previous frustrations, his current focus is on achieving a spot in the playoffs, indicating a commitment to the team’s performance on the pitch.
