Kaizer Chiefs weigh Fernando da Cruz return as head coach talks emerge

Multiple reports indicate that Kaizer Chiefs have opened discussions with Fernando da Cruz about becoming the club’s next head coach, a development that could see the Frenchman return to Naturena months after a brief stint within the technical setup.

Supporters first encountered the 53-year-old during the early weeks of the 2024/25 preparations, when he worked alongside Tunisian coach Nasreddine Nabi during pre-season.

From futsal captain to dugout strategist

Da Cruz never built a professional career in association football, yet his leadership credentials emerged early through futsal, where he captained France’s national side.

Born in France to a family of Portuguese heritage, he developed a reputation for meticulous planning and tactical discipline.

Coaches who have worked with him often highlight his structured match preparation and preference for systems such as 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1, formations that align comfortably with Chiefs’ current tactical profile.

Coaching path across Europe

His coaching journey began in recruitment, scouting for French club Lille OSC before progressing to manage the club’s Under-19 side. In 2012 he moved to Belgian outfit Royal Excel Mouscron, initially as assistant coach and later as caretaker manager following the dismissal of Rachid Chihab.

His first spell in charge produced four wins in eleven matches, after which he returned to academy duties. A second spell at Lille again saw him step in temporarily during the 2017/18 campaign, overseeing six games.

Moroccan success and unfinished business

Da Cruz later managed Lille’s reserve side before returning briefly to Mouscron. A new chapter arrived in Morocco with AS FAR, where he initially served as technical director before taking charge of the first team. During the 2022/23 season he guided the club to the Botola League title, though his tenure ended after their CAF Confederation Cup quarter-final elimination against USM Alger.

Despite that setback, Da Cruz remained within the club’s technical structure and later joined Nabi at Chiefs.

He departed before the season began, accepting a role with the Moroccan football federation. Armed with a UEFA Pro Licence, coach has overseen 120 matches, collecting 48 wins, 35 draws and 36 defeats.
