Kaizer Chiefs turn to familiar hand as Bheki Shongwe returns as CEO
Kaizer Chiefs have turned to a familiar figure in their latest boardroom reshuffle, confirming the appointment of Bheki Shongwe as Group Chief Executive Officer from May 2026.
The move signals a renewed emphasis on continuity and institutional knowledge as the Soweto giants seek stability and progress both on and off the pitch.
Shongwe’s elevation marks a return to executive leadership within the club, having previously served as Managing Director between 2009 and 2012.
In recent years, he remained connected to Amakhosi as a non-executive director, offering strategic oversight before now stepping into a more hands-on role at a critical juncture for the organisation.
“Kaizer Chiefs are pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Bheki Shongwe as the new Group Chief Executive Officer of the Club, effective May 2026,” the club said in a statement.
In his new capacity, Shongwe will take charge of the club’s daily operations, reporting directly to chairman Kaizer Motaung and the board.
His responsibilities will also include working closely with departmental heads to streamline performance across all areas, while supporting the chairman in steering the broader strategic direction of the club.
The appointment reflects a deliberate choice by Chiefs to rely on experience and internal familiarity as they aim to reinforce their long-standing identity.
The club expressed confidence in Shongwe’s leadership credentials, highlighting his understanding of the institution’s culture and ambitions as central to its next phase.
Beyond football administration, Shongwe brings a strong corporate pedigree to the role. He has held prominent positions as chairman of Flow Communications and Evraz Highveld Steel & Vanadium, building a reputation in business leadership that complements his experience in sport.
His journey into executive leadership is underpinned by early roots in football. A former player for Manzini Wanderers and Gaborone United, the Eswatini-born administrator transitioned from the pitch into the boardroom, combining sporting insight with business acumen.
Academically, Shongwe holds a Master of Business Administration in Strategy and Finance from the University of South Australia, alongside studies in Economics and Accounting, further strengthening his credentials for the role.
Chiefs concluded their announcement by welcoming him back into a full-time leadership position and backing him to guide the club forward as it builds on its 56-year legacy.
