Kaizer Chiefs legend Shaun Bartlett has casted doubts about the future of Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso heading into the new campaign.
Sundowns have struggled to secure the CAF Champions League title despite their dominance in the South African premiership.
In the recently concluded campaign, the Brazilians emerged as the champions of the Premier League, marking their eight consecutive success in the top-flight.
However, Shaun Bartlett has raises concerns about the Tshwane giants’ head coach future ahead of next season, saying lack of continental triumph this season will increase pressure on the Portuguese tactician.
“I think the Premiership they found a way to get the squad together, where they can play two, three different teams consecutively because of the quality they have. No disrespect to any coach but I think for the last few years, that Sundowns team is a well-oiled machine and sometimes you don’t even need a coach to be on the touchline.
For Cardoso I think the pressure will come in the CAF Champions League, that is where Sundowns want more success, if he doesn’t get it this season, it’s going to be difficult for them to retain him,” – Bartlett stated, as quoted by KickOFF.
Mamelodi Sundowns have shifted their attention on restructuring their squad for the new season following the FIFA Club World Cup participation.
As was the case in the previous transfer windows, Sundowns are expected to be active as they hope to get players who can help them achieve their season targets.
Last season, they only managed to defend the PSL but fell short in the Nedbank Cup – they were eliminated in the semi-final by the eventual champions, Kaizer Chiefs, and in the CAF Champions League.
Their hope of winning a second continental star was dashed by Pyramids FC of Egypt, who won their first.
