Kaizer Chiefs held by Mamelodi Sundowns in Betway Premiership draw

Kaizer Chiefs were held to a 1-1 draw by Mamelodi Sundowns at FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon, with both sides sharing the points after an improved second-half contest.

Chiefs took the lead shortly after the hour mark when Langelihle Phili finished a fine move to put the home side ahead. Sundowns responded through Cassius Mailula, whose header restored parity with 15 minutes remaining.

The draw leaves Kaizer Chiefs top of the Betway Premiership with seven points from three matches. They are level on points with AmaZulu, who beat Siwelele 2-0 in the other 15:00 kick-off on Saturday.

Chiefs had gone into the match in confident mood after winning their opening two league games. Mamelodi Sundowns, meanwhile, had only begun their league campaign in midweek, securing a dramatic 3-2 victory against TS Galaxy.

Despite the strong starts made by both teams, the opening half at FNB Stadium produced little attacking excitement. Each side managed only one shot on target before the match came to life after the interval.

Chiefs opened the scoring through a moment of individual quality from Siphisihle Ndlovu. The midfielder won possession just outside the Sundowns penalty area before evading two opponents attempting to challenge him.

Ndlovu then released the ball to Langelihle Phili, who struck beyond Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams to give Chiefs the advantage.

For Phili, the goal came only a week after joining Chiefs in a lucrative move from Stellenbosch. His celebration reflected the significance of the moment, although he was shown a yellow card after removing his shirt.

The goal lifted the atmosphere inside the stadium, with the Soweto Giants and their supporters hoping to secure a rare league victory over Masandawana at FNB Stadium.

Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso responded by turning to his substitutes in search of an equaliser. His decision paid off when Mailula once again made an impact for the club.

Mailula had scored on his second debut for Sundowns in the MTN8 and proved decisive again, rising to head the ball past Brandon Petersen and bring the visitors level with 15 minutes left to play.

Sundowns enjoyed the greater share of possession for much of the match, as expected. Chiefs coach da Cruz had selected a defensive line-up because of injury problems, with five left-back options unavailable.

That approach limited the home side’s attacking threat for periods, but Chiefs remained competitive after taking the lead. Sundowns’ pressure eventually produced the equaliser, although neither team could find a late winner.

On the overall balance of possession and chances created at Soccer City, a share of the points represented a fair outcome. Chiefs remain at the top of the table, while Sundowns leave with a point from their first Betway Premiership match of the campaign.
