Kaizer Chiefs face left-back crisis before crucial Richards Bay trip

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando da Cruz faces a major selection dilemma on Wednesday, with his side set to travel to the Princess Magogo Stadium to face Richards Bay without a recognised left-back.

The Glamour Boys are under pressure to collect three points and keep pace with their bitter Soweto rivals Orlando Pirates at the top of the Betway Premiership. However, a severely depleted squad has left Da Cruz with limited options for the important away fixture.

The Naturena-based club have lost all five of their defensive choices for the left-back position, leaving the coach to decide who can fill the role against Richards Bay.

That injury was followed by another blow involving promising youth prospect Kabelo Nkgwesa, leaving Chiefs without a traditional left-back available for selection.

Da Cruz must therefore make a difficult tactical decision as he prepares his team for a match that could have a significant impact on their league campaign. His ability to adapt to the shortage of defensive options will be tested to its fullest extent.

Chiefs are desperate to secure maximum points away from home, with victory allowing them to reduce the gap to the league-leading Buccaneers and maintain pressure on Orlando Pirates.

The match also provides an opportunity for Da Cruz’s rejuvenated Chiefs side to demonstrate its resilience. A win despite the club’s severe personnel limitations would underline the coach’s tactical flexibility and offer evidence that Amakhosi have the character needed to challenge for top honours this season.
