Kaizer Chiefs drop further behind Mamelodi Sundowns after Golden Arrows draw

Kaizer Chiefs will begin the international break seven points behind Mamelodi Sundowns after being held to a goalless draw by Golden Arrows in the Betway Premiership on Sunday.

Fernando da Cruz made two changes to the Chiefs attack, bringing in Luke Baartman and Faiz Abrahams for Etiosa Ighodaro and Siphesihle Ndlovu. Renaldo Leaner also made his official debut in goal, replacing the injured Brandon Petersen.

Leaner was tested early when Junior Dion connected with a first-time volley inside the penalty area. The Chiefs goalkeeper reacted sharply to keep out the effort and preserve parity.

Golden Arrows were the more threatening side during the opening period and came close again after 25 minutes. Dion was presented with a clear opportunity after Inacio Miguel and Thabo Moloisane failed to track their opponents, but he could only scuff his attempted cross with Leaner exposed.

Despite being second best for much of the first half, Chiefs were given an opportunity to take the lead five minutes later. Abrahams was fouled in the area by Ntandoyenkosi Mabaso, prompting the referee to award a penalty.

Lebohang Maboe took responsibility from the spot, but Thakasani Mbanjwa guessed correctly and saved the kick to keep the match goalless.

There was little change to the pattern at the start of the second half, leading Da Cruz to make further attacking changes. Mduduzi Shabalala and Adolf Mtasingwa were introduced as Chiefs looked for a way through a well-organised Arrows defence.

Golden Arrows coach Pitso Dladla also altered his side for the final 25 minutes, sending on Ronaldo van Neel and Nhlanhla Gasa in place of Philani Khumalo and Sabelo Sithole.

Chiefs then came within inches of breaking the deadlock. Substitute Asanele Velebayi made progress down the left before delivering for Mfundo Vilakazi, whose first-time volley struck the crossbar.

The hosts had the final major chance with three minutes remaining. Van Neel created the opening and found Thokazani Khumalo, but the forward sent his shot wide with only Leaner to beat.

Neither side could find a winner, leaving Golden Arrows and Kaizer Chiefs to share the points at 0-0.
