Kaizer Chiefs consider extending Inacio Miguel’s contract after positive spell

Kaizer Chiefs are increasingly likely to retain Inacio Miguel beyond the end of his current contract, with the defender’s happiness at the club offering the clearest indication yet that an extension could be agreed.

Miguel is in the third year of the deal he signed after joining Chiefs in July 2024. The Soweto club paid R4.2 million to secure the Angola international from Petro de Luanda, Angola’s serial champions.

The 30-year-old has adapted comfortably to life in Johannesburg. His command of English has helped make the transition straightforward, while his family has also joined him from Portugal, where he was born and lives. Miguel has Angolan roots.

His progress on the pitch has followed a similar path. After suspension problems disrupted the early part of his first season, Miguel established himself as a regular member of the Chiefs side.

He has made a clean start to his third campaign and has played every minute so far.

Miguel’s package at Naturena was improved for his third season compared with the terms he received during his first two years at the club. Information emerging from within his time at Chiefs points to him being satisfied with the way he has been treated.

That sense of contentment is understood to have strengthened the possibility that he will remain with the club after his present agreement expires.

Miguel turns 31 this year, meaning that any new contract is likely to be shorter than the three-year deal he signed when he arrived from Petro de Luanda.

One advantage for the defender is the confidence he has earned from Chiefs head coach Fernando da Cruz. Miguel’s increasing importance to the team, combined with the trust of the manager, has put him in a strong position as discussions about his future develop.

Before joining Chiefs, Miguel played in Portugal, Romania, Latvia and Angola. His move to South Africa represented another step in a career that has taken him through several European and African leagues.

An Angolan publication reported last year that Miguel’s package at the Soweto giants was already worth about R4.6 million per year.

Chiefs’ decision will therefore involve balancing the defender’s performances and importance to da Cruz with his age and the likely length of a new agreement. For now, Miguel’s consistent involvement and apparent satisfaction at Naturena suggest the relationship is moving towards an extension rather than an exit.
