Kaizer Chiefs back goalkeeper Brandon Petersen for 2026 World Cup spot
Kaizer Chiefs interim co-coach Cedric Kaze is urging South Africa coach Hugo Broos to consider his goalkeeper Brandon Petersen for the 2026 World Cup tournament, to be co-hosted in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Kaze believes Petersen has done enough this season to merit a place in the Bafana Bafana squad for the global tournament.
His endorsement comes after Petersen once again produced a commanding display in Chiefs’ 1-0 victory over AmaZulu FC in a Betway Premiership clash at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.
The former Bidvest Wits goalkeeper has been one of Chiefs’ standout performers this campaign, often proving decisive in crucial moments and helping the Glamour Boys remain competitive throughout the season.
“I just wish to see Brendon Petersen going to the World Cup because he deserves it by the qualities that he has shown and as well the consistency that he has shown throughout the season,” Kaze said after the match.
The Burundian tactician explained that Petersen’s resurgence this season has largely been down to consistent game time after struggling for minutes in the previous campaign.
According to Kaze, the goalkeeper’s professionalism, work ethic and positive influence within the squad are qualities that align perfectly with what Broos looks for in his national team setup.
“He is a player with tremendous human being qualities before being a player and I am very happy that this is happening to him, and he deserves everything that is happening to him,” Kaze added.
“I would say that what has changed as well is first is the number of minutes because he didn’t play much last season.
“He played in the final of the Nedbank Cup, this season he got a lot of time and as well he is a player that works hard, he trains every day with the same attitude, with the same energy and I would like to say to the players that good things happen to good people.”
Kaizer Chiefs have already secured a third-place finish in the Premiership standings and will conclude their league campaign with a home clash against Chippa United next week.
