Juventus sign Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario on loan
Juventus have signed Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario on a season-long loan deal that includes an option to buy, turning to the Italy international after their attempt to recruit Emiliano Martinez stalled.
Vicario’s move gives the Italian club a new goalkeeper for the forthcoming campaign while preserving flexibility over a permanent transfer. Juventus had initially identified Martinez as their preferred target, but negotiations for the Argentina international failed to progress, prompting the club to pursue Vicario instead.
The 30-year-old goalkeeper is returning to Italian football after joining Tottenham from Empoli. He had been linked with a move to Inter towards the end of last season and was reportedly open to returning to Serie A during the current transfer window.
Vicario’s arrival also allows Juventus to keep their longer-term options open as they assess their goalkeeping plans. One of the players who has attracted interest from Luciano Spalletti since the end of last season is Brazil goalkeeper Alisson, whose contract with Liverpool is due to expire in the summer of 2027.
Alisson, a former Roma player, had been among the names considered by Spalletti. However, Juventus now appear closer to completing Vicario’s transfer before the new season begins.
Vicario played 43 matches for Tottenham in all competitions last season and recorded 13 clean sheets. He conceded 65 goals during those appearances.
The goalkeeper has also made five appearances for Italy, with his most recent international outing coming in November. The source article lists Vicario as 29 in its international record, while describing him earlier as 30.
His move to Juventus represents a return to the league where he established himself before moving to England. Vicario joined Tottenham from Empoli and became part of the London club’s goalkeeping options, but the possibility of a temporary return to Italy has now been completed.
For Juventus, the agreement provides an immediate solution without committing the club to a permanent transfer at this stage. The option to buy means they can make a final decision on Vicario’s future after assessing his performances in Turin.
The deal also brings an end, for now, to Juventus’ pursuit of Martinez, who had been their first choice. With that agreement unable to be concluded, Vicario has become the goalkeeper Juventus are working to secure ahead of the start of the new campaign.
