Junior Starlets refocus on Korea DPR clash after tough opening loss to England
Kenya’s Junior Starlets began their FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup campaign with a hard-fought 2-0 defeat against England at the Estadio Cibao Stadium on Thursday, October 17, 2024. Despite the loss, the team remains optimistic and has shifted its focus to the upcoming crucial match against Korea DPR.
The encounter against England saw the Starlets put up a valiant fight, but their efforts fell short after England capitalized on key moments.
The game’s momentum shifted in the 29th minute when England’s Lola Brown converted a penalty, putting her side ahead.
Kenya, however, refused to be deterred, battling back with determination as attackers Marion Serenge and Valerie Nekesa led a series of offensive plays in search of an equalizer.
Despite their relentless efforts, the first half ended with England holding a narrow 1-0 lead.
In a bid to change the game’s dynamics, Kenya made tactical adjustments in the second half.
Head coach Duncan Mwangi introduced Susan Akoth in the 57th minute to inject fresh energy into the squad, replacing Lindey Weey Atieno.
The Starlets continued to press, but England remained resilient in defense.
As the match progressed, England doubled their advantage in the 84th minute with a well-executed strike from Lauryn Thompson, effectively sealing the win. Kenya made another substitution shortly after, with Joan Ogola coming on for Lorna Faith, but the team couldn’t find a way back into the match.
Despite a spirited performance, the Starlets had to contend with a late yellow card shown to Christine Adhiambo in the 89th minute, marking the end of a challenging game.
England’s 2-0 victory leaves the Junior Starlets with plenty to ponder as they prepare for their next group stage fixture.
However, the Kenyan side remains resolute and determined to bounce back when they face Korea DPR on Sunday, October 20, 2024, at 11 am EAT, once again at the Estadio Cibao Stadium.
Speaking after the game, head coach Duncan Mwangi praised his team’s effort despite the result.
“We played with heart and gave our all against a strong England side.
There were positives to take from the match, and we now turn our full attention to Korea DPR,” he said.
The Junior Starlets know that the clash against Korea DPR will be critical for their chances of advancing in the tournament.
A win would keep their hopes alive in the competition, while another defeat would make progression increasingly difficult.
The Kenyan starting XI against England featured Velma Abwire in goal, alongside defenders Elizabeth Ochaka, Lorine Ilavonga, Diana Anyango, and Christine Adhiambo. The midfield was anchored by Halima Imbachi and Rebecca Odato, with Lorna Faith, Lindey Weey Atieno, Marion Serenge, and Valerie Nekesa leading the attack.
Substitutes included Ephy Awuor, Kimberly Akinyi, Jenevive Mithel, Quinter Odiwuor, Velma Awuor, Pearl Olesi, Susan Akoth, and Joan Ogola.
With lessons learned from their opening match, Kenya will be aiming for a strong response against Korea DPR, determined to prove they can compete at the highest level on the world stage.
