South Sudan’s U-17 team, the Junior Bright Stars, suffered a 4-0 defeat against El Merriekh SC Bentiu in a friendly match held at Juba National Stadium. The game was part of the team’s preparations for the CECAFA Zonal Qualifiers for the 2025 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The qualifiers, scheduled to take place from December 14 to 28, 2024, will see South Sudan competing in Group B alongside Kenya, Sudan, and Somalia.
The team aims to replicate their remarkable performance from the previous edition, where they defeated Tanzania in a dramatic penalty shootout to secure a spot at AFCON and reached the final before falling 3-1 to Somalia.
As the Junior Bright Stars gear up for the high-stakes competition, the leadership of the South Sudan Football Association (SSFA) has stepped in to boost morale.
President of the SSFA, Gen. Augustino Madout Parek, alongside Organizing Committee Chairman Wiyual Lam Pouch, Secretary General Victor Lawrence Lual, and senior national team captain Juma Jenaro, delivered words of encouragement to the squad.
Gen. Parek urged the players to embrace the challenge with pride and determination. “You have already made us proud by putting South Sudan on the map of African football.
Now is the time to push further and showcase your discipline, talent, and resilience. Trust in your training, trust in your teammates, and play with courage. The entire nation is behind you,” he said.
Secretary General Victor Lawrence Lual emphasized the importance of unity and focus. “You’ve proven your potential in the past, and now it’s time to raise the bar.
Believe in yourselves and in each other. Remember, every challenge is an opportunity for growth. Play for the pride of South Sudan, and the SSFA will always stand by you,” he added.
National team captain Juma Jenaro shared his own experiences, encouraging the U-17 squad to seize the opportunity. “This is your moment to shine.
You’ve already shown the region what South Sudan can achieve. Play with one heart, unity, and determination. Support each other and never give up, no matter the challenges. We believe in you,” he stated passionately.
The Junior Bright Stars are now focused on their upcoming matches, determined to make another historic run.
With fans across the nation rallying behind them, the team is working hard to refine their strategies and fitness as they prepare to take on regional rivals in their quest for a place in the 2025 AFCON U-17.
