Jules Kounde walking suspension tightrope against Villarreal

Jules Kounde heads into Barcelona’s clash with Villarreal knowing one mistimed challenge could rule him out of the next La Liga game.

The French defender has collected four yellow cards in 24 league appearances, leaving him just one booking away from a one-match suspension that would see him miss the upcoming trip to Athletic Club.

Kounde’s performances have been up and down this season, but he remains a key piece in Hansi Flick’s defensive structure and usually starts in the backline. If he is cautioned and subsequently suspended, Barcelona are expected to turn to Joao Cancelo, whose versatility allows him to cover both right-back and centre-back without a major tactical reshuffle.

The situation is even more delicate because Barcelona are already without Frenkie de Jong, who will miss around 5–6 weeks with a hamstring injury.

Losing their main midfield organiser increases the need for defensive focus, as Villarreal are dangerous in transition and can punish any lapses in concentration at Camp Nou. The message for Kounde is clear: play aggressively, but pick your moments carefully.
