Minala Insists: “I Am 17” Amid Ongoing Age Dispute
Lazio midfielder Joseph Marie Minala has spoken out publicly for the first time in response to persistent allegations questioning his age, firmly asserting that he is indeed 17 years old.
The Cameroonian teenager has been at the centre of scrutiny since joining the Italian club, with many critics casting doubt over his official birth date of August 24, 1996. However, Minala remains resolute and says he is open to undergoing medical examinations to clear his name.
“I am from Cameroon and I was born on August 24, 1996. The authorities can carry out tests if they wish,” Minala told reporters.
“I think we Africans look older than our age. But even if we don’t have the same skin colour, we are equal to others.”
The midfielder, who has made headlines more for the debate surrounding his age than his performances on the pitch, addressed his detractors directly.
“Those who speak are perhaps among the players I have bothered on the pitch and who have never been able to see the ball.”
Reflecting on his path to professional football in Italy, Minala described himself as fortunate and said he holds no grudges.
“That’s my real age. I even invite those who wish to come and celebrate my 18th birthday,” he added, with a touch of irony.
Minala will officially turn 18 on August 24.
