Al Ahly legend, Mahmoud Aboul-Dahab, has criticised the appointment of Jose Riveiro as the head coach for the side.
The Spanish gaffer is expected to be unveiled as the head coach for the side at the end of the season.
He will replace Swiss manager Marcel Koller, who has been shown the exit after failing to defend the CAF Champions League title.
With Riveiro expected to sign a two-year deal with the side, as revealed by AfricaSoccer.com, Aboul-Dahab thinks his former club might have made a mistake by roping in the Vigo-born gaffer.
According to him, Ahly should have instead brought a more experienced coach, considering the pressure and demand from the club’s fans, more especially ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup.
“I saw Rivero when he was with the South African side, Orlando Pirates, and he performed well,” El-Dahab said, per Almasryalyoum.com.
“I believe Al Ahly deserved a coach with a stronger resume, especially considering they earned a spot in the 2025 Club World Cup.
“Al Ahly and Zamalek are clubs that would make any coach proud.
“I wish him success at Al Ahly in the coming period, but in my view, this appointment may not be the best possible choice,” he added.
Riveiro spent three seasons with Orlando Pirates, winning three MTN 8 titles and two Nedbank Cup trophies. However, he failed to clinch the league title during his tenure.
