Egyptian club FC Zamalek has confirmed that José Peseiro will remain as head coach despite their elimination from the CAF Champions League.
Zamalek’s campaign in Africa’s premier club competition came to an end following a 1-0 loss to South Africa’s Stellenbosch FC.
After a goalless draw in the first leg of the quarterfinals in South Africa, Zamalek were unable to overcome Stellenbosch in the second leg, which took place at Cairo International Stadium on Wednesday night.
Following the home defeat, speculation arose suggesting that Peseiro, the experienced Portuguese coach, could face dismissal due to his inability to lead the team to the semi-finals.
However, Zamalek board member Hussein El-Sayed swiftly denied the rumors, reaffirming that Peseiro’s position at the club remains secure.
“It is not true what is being reported about Peseiro leaving Zamalek after the recent defeat to Stellenbosch,” El-Sayed said per Sport.ElwatanNews.Com.
“Peseiro will continue to lead the team as normal, and there is absolutely no intention of him leaving despite the recent defeat.”
Peseiro joined Zamalek in February on an 18-month contract, replacing Swiss coach Christian Gross, who was dismissed earlier this year.
It is still unclear whether Peseiro’s tenure will be affected by the team’s failure to reach the CAF Champions League semi-finals.
Meanwhile, Stellenbosch FC will now face Tanzanian powerhouse Simba SC in the Confederation Cup semi-finals, with Simba being coached by former Orlando Pirates boss Fadlu Davids.
