Fenerbahçe manager Jose Mourinho has expressed his gratitude to Didier Drogba and Mikel Obi for publicly defending him against accusations of racism following a controversial Super Lig match against Galatasaray.
Mourinho dismisses racism allegations
The Portuguese coach came under fire after Galatasaray accused him of making racist remarks in the wake of a heated draw between the two Istanbul rivals.
However, the claims were met with swift support for Mourinho from several former players, including Chelsea legends Drogba and Mikel, who played under him during their time at Stamford Bridge.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Mourinho rejected the accusations, emphasizing his long-standing connection with African footballers and his deep respect for the continent.
I have to thank those who have not hesitated to speak out, especially my former African players. Their support has been very important,” he said.
Drogba and Mikel defend Mourinho
Both Drogba and Mikel, who won multiple trophies under Mourinho at Chelsea, were quick to vouch for their former manager’s character.
Drogba, an Ivorian football icon, described Mourinho as a coach who has always supported and respected African players throughout his career.
Mikel echoed similar sentiments, highlighting how Mourinho had played a crucial role in his development as a player and had never displayed any discriminatory behavior.
Their statements helped counter the allegations, reinforcing Mourinho’s legacy as a manager who has worked closely with African talent throughout his career, including stars like Samuel Eto’o, Michael Essien, and Salomon Kalou.
“The accusation backfired” – Mourinho
Mourinho further stated that Galatasaray’s attempt to tarnish his reputation had failed, as those familiar with his track record knew the claims were unfounded.
Instead of attacking me, it backfired on them,” he remarked, suggesting that the accusations had only strengthened the support he received from former players and fans alike.
Despite the controversy, the Fenerbahçe boss remains focused on his team’s objectives in the Turkish Super Lig, where he hopes to lead the club to domestic and European success.
With key figures rallying behind him, Mourinho appears determined to put the allegations behind him and concentrate on the challenges ahead.
