Jorthy Mokio has officially bid farewell to the DR Congo national team as he prepares to make his debut for Belgium in the upcoming UEFA Nations League play-offs against Ukraine this month.
The 17-year-old Ajax midfielder was named in new Belgium head coach Rudi Garcia’s first squad, confirming his decision to represent the Red Devils at the international level.
Mokio, who was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo, had been eligible to play for the Leopards but has now committed his future to Belgium.
Mokio’s rise and courtois’ return
Garcia had previously expressed interest in the young talent, and Mokio’s inclusion in the squad highlights his rapid development.
The midfielder, currently playing for Ajax, has made 12 appearances for the Dutch club’s first team, showcasing his potential on a bigger stage.
Meanwhile, Thibaut Courtois is set to return to the Belgian national team after a period of absence.
The 32-year-old Real Madrid goalkeeper had stepped away from international duty under former coach Domenico Tedesco but has now made himself available again following Garcia’s appointment.
Mokio’s decision to represent Belgium instead of DR Congo is expected to stir discussions among football fans, particularly in Africa, where dual-nationality players often face difficult choices regarding their international allegiance.
