Joel Asoro: Sweden right winger at FC Metz linked with Djurgården move

Djurgården are being linked with a move to re‑sign Sweden‑Nigeria winger Joel Asoro from French side FC Metz.

The 26-year-old, valued at about €900,000 on Transfermarkt, is the subject of fresh speculation over a return to the Allsvenskan, with a possible switch from Ligue 1 to Stockholm reported on 11 March 2026. The probability of the transfer is currently listed as “?”, and no fee or contract details have been disclosed.

Asoro, who wears the number 99 shirt for Metz, joined the French club from Djurgårdens IF in August 2023 after a standout spell in Sweden. The right-footed attacker, born in Haninge on 27 April 1999 and standing 1.76m tall, can operate across the front line but is primarily used as a right winger.

There is no publicly available information on when his Metz contract expires, raising the possibility he could become a free agent if talks over an extension do not progress. Any approach from Djurgården is therefore likely to consider both a cut‑price transfer and a potential free‑agent scenario, with his current market value below the €2m peak he reached during his previous stint in Stockholm.

Asoro’s career has already taken him through several major European leagues. He left IF Brommapojkarna’s youth system for Sunderland’s academy in 2015, breaking into the first team a year later. Moves to Swansea City, loan spells with FC Groningen in the Eredivisie and Genoa in Serie A, and then a permanent switch back to Djurgården preceded his transfer to Metz.

The Swede of Nigerian heritage has experienced fluctuating values – from €2.5m at Swansea in 2018 to the current €900k at Metz – but regular football back in Allsvenskan could yet re‑ignite his trajectory. A return to Djurgården would offer Asoro familiarity and prominence at a key age, and could prove decisive in shaping the next phase of his career if the rumoured move materialises.
